THE KING WHO DID NOT DIE
Some men sing of Cuchulain
And some of Finn McCool
But the greatest Celtic Warrior
Has a name we learned in school
Born of the Pendragon
A Cornishman ‘tis said
King Arthur, King of Cornwall
The King who is not dead.
Merlin the Magician
Had changed King Uthers shape
So Igraine, wife of Gorlois
He did not have to rape
He came to her with Gorlois face
And when the morning come
He left her with a royal line
The Pendragon, her son.
When Arthur was a young man
He was fostered far from home
But when the call of Kingship came
He therefore ceased to roam
And one day at a tournament
To claim the Royal Throne
He did what no man else could
Pulled Sword from the Stone.
The Saxon wars were on him then
As old Rome it did fall
And many a brave young Cornish lad
Answered Arthur's call
In twelve great battles he survived
And made invaders flee
And drove the Saxon banner
Beyond nine waves of sea.
But treachery it brought him down
And left the Kingdom red
The plotters were Morgana
And her bastard son Mordred
Merlin could not save him
By Morgana was out-foxed
And underneath the standing stone
She left him safely boxed.
